What is a Laparoscopic Fundoplication?
A laparoscopic fundoplication (sometimes called a Nissen) is a surgery that recreates the LES by wrapping the top of the stomach around the esophagus. This prevents acid from backwashing into the esophagus. Laparoscopic surgery is performed through five small incisions instead of one long incision. As a result, there is less pain, a shorter hospital stay, and quicker recovery. How do I know if surgery is right for me? Ask your doctor if a laparoscopic fundoplication should be considered to help control your GERD.
