The book term “landing tread” (a.k.a. bull nose) nosing is a trim piece applied to the front edge of a landing that, if viewed from the front, is like a tread. It then steps down on the bottom side to the thickness of the flooring. Flooring is then placed up to the rear edge to fill in the landing. Please explain when I should use a threshold, a reducer, and/or a carpet transition piece. Thresholds may be used in many applications. At an exterior door, it gives a raised area for the door to close against, keeping out drafts. Interior applications are few. Where two different floors meet, that are the same height, a threshold may be used to cover that joint. In years past, they were used at all interior doors allowing the homeowner to selectively heat spaces while others were sealed off. A reducer is just that. As the wood floor is ¾” and a vinyl floor is 1/16″, where they meet is a big difference. The reducer gives a sloped transition from one to the other. The carpet transition reduce
