What is a KVM switch?
A KVM switch is a keyboard, video and mouse switch. KVM switches are extremely useful when controlling one or more computers or servers. With a KVM switch you can easily connect one keyboard, video monitor and mouse to a multitude of computers or servers. Usually KVM switches can control up to 64 computers at one time and you can even daisy chain your servers for your KVM switch to control more than that if need be.
A KVM switch is a device that allows controlling and accessing multiple (2 or more) computers/servers from just one (or more) console(s) (keyboard, monitor and mouse). A KVM switch provides direct access to the keyboard, video and mouse (KVM) ports of the controlled computers. KVM switches, depending on the model, allow controlling two to thousands of computers/servers, from one or any number of controlling consoles, locally or remotely.
“KVM” stands for Keyboard, Video and Mouse. The term KVM was coined in the late 80’s to describe the then emerging technologies that allow a single workstation consisting of a single keyboard, monitor and mouse to control more than one computer. KVM switches have changed greatly over the last decade, but the original concept remains. Reduce the equipment you need to control multiple computers. The most common KVM switches allow one user to control two or more computers with one keyboard, monitor and mouse.
A KVM Switch is a device that allows someone to use more than 1 computer from only 1 keyboard, monitor and mouse. Anyone can literally manage all of the computers in their office/server room from their desk without getting up. The limits to what you can do with KVM Switches are few. You can manage anywhere from 2 computers to thousands of servers using a KVM Switch.
