What is a Knox Box and how can I have one installed at my home or business?
• A: A Knox Box is a secure, storage device that is installed on the outside of your home or business that only the Des Moines Fire Department has a key to open. When an emergency occurs, the Des Moines Fire Department uses the key to open the box and access keys to your home or business. This process reduces valuable time to enter the premise and evaluate/mitigate the emergency. It may also minimize damage to a door or window if the situation dictates gaining immediate access to the inside of the home or business. The Des Moines Fire Department also recommends keeping contact information inside the Knox Box for notification purposes when an emergency occurs. 1.
