What is a joint health and safety committee (JHSC)?
The JHSC is an advisory body required under the Act. It is comprised of both worker members and management members who meet at least every 3 months to discuss health and safety issues in the workplace. The powers of the committee are: · Identifying Workplace Hazards – The main purpose of the committee is to identify hazards, such as machinery, processes, working conditions, substances, procedures or any other potential hazards that could endanger the health and safety of workers. · Obtain Information from the Employer – This includes obtaining information about any actual or potential hazard in the workplace and any testing being carried out for occupational health and safety purposes. It also includes obtaining information about the health and safety experience, standards or work practices at other workplaces. · Make Recommendations to the Employer – The committee can make recommendations to the employer or the workers on ways to improve workplace health and safety. · Investigate Work
