What is a hybrid electric vehicle?
A vehicle that is powered by a combination of gas or diesel engine plus battery powered motors. Usually the batteries are charged by either the internal combustion engine, or by movement of he vehicle during electical braking. So, stopping returns part of the power it took to start the vehicle, to be used again to start it, Some vehicles like Prius are able to propel themselves entirely by battery power while others use it only to supplement the internal combustion engine. Some, like Prius, may be charged up before leaving home, some will be charged up only when the engine is running or car is braking.
