What is a Huckleberry?

0

The Huckleberry Hill Nature Preserve is located in Monterey CA, and got it’s name for the huckleberries that grow wild there. The huckleberry is similar to a blueberry, but larger, and juicier. They are ready for picking in late summer, end of August to mid September.

A huckleberry is a shrub in the Ericaceae. This is the same family that has blueberries, rhododendrons and mountain laurel. The fruits of many of the varieties are edible. The shrubs themselves are often low lying and you can find individual plants that exist as giant clones that cover hundreds of square meters. Some folks will call berries blueberries that are actually huckelberries. There is a dwarf huckelberry in Kentucky that I was interested in doing some genetic research on, but I decided to work with some different plant species. Perhaps I’ll get back to huckelberries again some time in the future.
