What is a Horace Mann School?
In 1998, the Mass Dept. of Education (D.O.E.) was authorized by the State to grant charters to public schools to be operated and managed by a Board of Trustees independent of local School Committees. These Charter Schools are called “Horace Mann Schools.” The Barnstable Horace Mann School was originally located in the former Barnstable Grade Five School serving all fifth graders in the town of Barnstable. During the summer of 2003, we moved to the former Barnstable Middle School of Marstons Mills building, and added all of the sixth graders in the town of Barnstable. Then in the summer of 2009, we restructured our school environment as an elementary school by currently educating fourth and fith grade students in our building.
