What is a homestudy?
A homestudy is in effect a study of your home and family by a licensed social worker. Your homestudy is required by state licensing standards to cover a number of topics from safety issues in your home to the financial stability of your family. You provide much of the information for the homestudy in your application and your autobiographies. You will be provided an outline for the autobiographies. You would then typically have one or more visits from a licensed social worker in your area. In Texas only one visit is required. You must comply with the standards of your state. The homestudy can take from 3 weeks to several months to complete, depending on your agency. Out of state applicants must provide a homestudy to Adoption Access along with their application. We then work with the social worker who did the homestudy to bring it into compliance with Texas standards. Prices vary widely for homestudies, and you will have to check with agencies in your area. A homestudy is an important first step in the adoption process, and it is required by law. The homestudy is a report on the adoptive parent(s)/family and is compiled after a series of interviews both in the offices of Catholic Charities and in the home of the adoptive family. The homestudy process is generally completed within a few months. Many topics are discussed during the homestudy, including your family history, education, parenting skills, and relationships. Your social worker also addresses your thoughts about adopting a child from a different culture, as well your questions, concerns and expectations.
The homestudy is completed through a process of interviews conducted in the agency office and your home. Homestudies include gathering social history information, personal and employment reference checks, and background checks with the Connecticut State Police, child abuse, vulnerable adult and sexual offender registries. Homestudies also assist families in clarifying preferences for the child they are to parent.
A homestudy is a written report required by California state law for individuals and couples who wish to adopt both domestically and internationally. Adoption Connection is licensed by the state of California to do the homestudy, which is a way to gather information to ensure that a child is placed in a qualified home. At Adoption Connection, we do not wish the homestudy to be intrusive or exclusive, but rather to serve as an educational and consulting tool. It provides Adoption Connection the opportunity to become familiar with clients’ readiness to adopt and helps clients think through the adoption-related issues and the responsibilities of parenting.
The mandatory homestudy is an evaluation and education tool to help us, as an agency, and you, as adopting parents, to determine your preparedness to parent through adoption. It is not a psychological analysis; our intent is to prepare you for the special needs of an adoptee and to help you build important parenting skills. The homestudy is different for each adoption as everyone has different histories and experiences that they bring into the process. It consists of paperwork, education, and interviews.
