What is a home study?
A home study is a pre-adoptive placement assessment that must be prepared for every family who wishes to adopt. The study is a thorough investigation of the adoptive parents. It is prepared so that you know that the people who adopt your baby are good, honest, caring people who will love and care for your child unconditionally. We will obtain their criminal history, medical history, child abuse history and much more. It is required that this home study be reviewed with you. If identifying information is not exchanged, we will ensure that you are only provided the appropriate information.
A home study is an in-home assessment (details below) by a licensed adoption agency or licensed social worker. As part of the adoption process, you will be required to have a home study. A social worker will come to your home and ask several questions about your life, both personal, professional and about your extended family. You will also need a physical completed and a criminal background check done. The social worker will provide you with the forms. They call it a home study, but what it really is, is a study about what kind of person you are.
A home study is a collaborative effort with the family to help determine if foster care will fit their family lifestyle. In the home study, the staff member will assess the potential foster home and complete a written summary on the strengths, skills, behavior, attitudes, stamina and any other qualifications that will help deal with the challenges of foster parenting. You select the level of needs and age group of the children you would like to foster.
A Home Study is a report written by a licensed social worker about you and your family. The worker will come to your home for several visits to interview you and discuss your life – past and present, and how adding children will affect your life. The purpose of a Home Study is to evaluate you and your family as a potential adoptive home and a potential match for a child. The County/Agency you choose to go with will perform this service.
