What is a Home Occupation Permit?
A home occupation permit allows you to conduct a business from your residence whether you own the property or lease it. In order to operate a business from your home, you need to have a business license and a home occupation permit. A Home Occupation Permit is required for a business when a commercial or other activity is conducted in a home, in the City of Brentwood by the resident, which the activity is clearly incidental and secondary to the use of the home as a residence and which exhibits no external evidence of the activity and will not change the residential character of the dwelling. In other words, if you are conducting business in the City of Brentwood, live in the City of Brentwood and do not operate from a commercial/store front location in the City, you must obtain a Home Occupation Permit. The Home Occupation Permit Application lists prohibited uses and prohibited activities and must be approved by the City of Brentwood’s Community Development Department prior to issuance of the business license.
