What is a halftone screen?
When publications are printed on a commercial printing press the shades of grey or color are represented by dots called a halftone. A halftone screen makes this conversion. Measured in lines per inch the lpi as it is called of publications such as newspapers is low, about 85 lpi and glossy magazines where the quality of photo reproduction is critical, 175 lpi and above. The resolution of the halftone screen determines the resolution of scanned art destined for print.
