what is a Grindstone Night, anyway?
The originator of the phrase “ESG Night at the Grindstone” may or may not be acknowledging this distinction. These days, “Grindstone” is ESG’s way of encouraging students to come to ESG to do their classwork. Our means of encouragement consists of (a) having food, usually some kind of dessert and (b) having tutors in the various subjects available to help. Very often, the cooks and tutors are the same. Students are welcome to help cook, and helpers get cuts in line. Said lines can be brutal; on a good night, a single apple pie will be eaten long before the pie plate is cool enough to handle without oven mitts. The days of the week for Grindstone Nights for Spring 2003 are set, but still subject to change due to travel, scheduling glitches, holidays and lack of a clean kitchen.
