What is a Green Card Lottery?
A Green Card is a US permanent resident visa which allows you to live and work permanently and legally in the United States. Green Card holders may leave the United States freely and may later apply for United States citizenship, but cannot vote. The Green Card Lottery gives you a chance to obtain a green card for you and your family. The Green Card Lottery is officially known as the “Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery Program” and is administered by the US Department of State. The purpose of the program is to increase the diversity of the United States with applicants from certain countries.
A specific number of Green Cards are available to individuals in countries who in recent years have only a few immigrants to the United States. The purpose of this program is to ensure a diverse ethnic mixture among those who come to the United States. These Green Cards are randomly assigned via a computer.
