What is a gravid spot? And how can I tell if my livebearer is going to give birth?

The gravid spot only indicates that a female is mature, a virgin female can still display a gravid spot. Not all livebearers have gravid spots in fact few do, and only those of the Genus Poecilia, Gambusia, and Xiphophorus (Guppys, Mollys, Limias, Mosquitofish, swordtails and Platys) really show this trait to any degree. I’ve been keeping Livebearing fishes for along time, and have always looked for that holy grail that indicates when a female will give birth, I can tell you from experience and research it’s up to her, the environmental conditions and genetics, their is no sure way to tell. The gravid spot has always been perceived as being important in determining birth timing, this is a myth.
