What is a Grand Mal Seizure?
A grand mal seizure is a form of generalized seizure that presents with entire body involvement. This is in contrast to other forms of seizures known as partial seizures that affect only part of the body at a time. Sometimes, a partial seizure spreads to affect other parts (called Secondary Generalization) and becomes a generalized seizure. A grand mal seizure is also known as the following: – Generalized tonic-clonic seizure – Epilepsia major – Gran Mal Grand mal seizures are the most recognized seizures with a lot of people having witnessed at least an occurrence. They are called tonic-clonic seizures because they involve a tonic phase and a clonic phase. They are usually characterized by a fall, loss of consciousness, stiffening (tonic phase) and finally, jerking of the entire body (clonic phase).
