What is a good website for activities for children at the kindergarten/1st grade level?
Six year olds are at the end of the stage where their brain’s plasticity is at an all-time high. They should NOT be on a computer, literally under developing their brain. Kids need to be outside, using their mechanics to stimulate parts of the brain that a typical computer could never reach. Touching, smelling, seeing, moving, thinking, etc. These are things that contribute, at a young age, to a multi-faceted approach to thinking when real school starts. The so-called educational shows and computer games (the biggest offender: Baby Einstein) only serve to distract the child with lots of moving pictures and sounds. Studies definitively conclude that “learning” a language on a DVD or computer screen is essentially ineffective. The only children who could recognize Mandarin Chinese as spoken by a person in front of them were the ones who were taught by a live teacher. There are all sorts of studies, I’ve read a few dozen.
