What is a good time for a 14 year old guy at the mile in track?
It depends on a lot of factors, including your condition, your physical build, your training, your goals, as well as course difficulty, course conditions, and weather. One x-c course I raced on in High School was particularly difficult, with two long uphill climbs, a patch of gravel right after a short up-down hill, and a half-mile of soft dusty horse track. The course record for a long time was rather slow for x-c times (until one out-of-state racer shattered it at an invitational). Other courses were less difficult, and had faster times. As a 13-year old, I ran a 6-minute mile without breaking a sweat (no one was fast enough for me to have to push myself faster). At 16 or 17, my fastest unofficial time was about 4:45, maybe 4:50, I don’t remember now. As for not getting slower, talk to your coach and follow a training schedule so you peak at the end of the season instead of in the middle or worse yet, at the beginning of the season.
