What is a good text source to teach myself Japanese?

I’ve been slowly teaching myself for a little over a year, and I’ve mostly been using audio tapes from Pimsleur which I’ve found to be excellent and this book which is what’s used in the MIT OpenCourseware courses online: Japanese: The Spoken Language (Part 1) (Paperback) by Eleanor Harz Jorden (Author) List Price: $34.00 Price: $29.67 & this item ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping http://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Spoken-Language-Part-1/dp/0300038348/ Now, you’re going to see some complaints from people which I think are pretty legitimate. The Romanization she uses is unique to her and non-standard, but it’s probably phonetically closer than anything else I’ve seen. And there’s broad agreement that it has the best explanation of the grammar of any book out there. So I’d definitely suggest giving it a look. Another one somebody told me was very good but which I haven’t tried yet is this
