What is a good rule of thumb when determining what followspot I need?

A good rule of thumb is to first determine your throw distance requirements. Throw Distance is “The effective distance between the luminaire’s exit aperture and the area or subject to be illuminated”. Once this distance is determined you will need to review the reverse section of each Followspot data sheet for the unit which will achieve a minimum footcandle reading of 100fc. Once this is determined, the next decision is based on the beam diameter. An acceptable minimum of 7′-9′ beam diameter at your predetermined throw distance will suffice. The final decision comes down to the Followspot’s features and user preference. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or even demo a product.
