The compromise of 1850 was a series of laws to deal with a variety of territory/boundary issues that popped up in the United States after the Mexican-American War, as well as the controversy surrounding slave states vs. free states. The two issues were related because, as new territories were admitted to the Union, any new territory admitted as a slave state would shift the balance of power toward the South; any new territory admitted as a free state would shift the balance of power toward the North.
