This story most portrays the region of “Calaveras County”, and in particular, the mining camps that sprung up there during the California Gold Rush. The following quote displays regionalism in a number of ways. Through the descripition of the dog fight, readers are given the impression of a people whose leisure time is spent on watcing and betting on violent and vicious animal fights.
