What is a good oral hygiene program for orthodontic patients?
Using the method recommended by their dentist, orthodontic patients should brush their teeth with a fluoride toothpaste after every meal, snack and before bed. (Fluoride toothpaste with the seal of acceptance of the American Dental Association’s Council on Dental Therapeutics have been proved effective.) Disclosing tablets that make plaque visible can be used after brushing, to show areas that have been missed. When recommended, an oral irrigating device can be used to remove food from between the teeth and around the braces. To help the tooth enamel resist decay, orthodontic patients should also make daily use of over the counter fluoride mouth rinse accepted by the ADA.
