WHAT IS A GOOD MYTH, LEGEND OR STORY…?
Plato’s Allegory of the Cave: Most young adult novels deal with self-knowledge and the road to self discovery. The Allegory of the Cave is similar to this, but gives the typical young adult theme a bit of a twist. To briefly summarize the story, there are people in a cave. They have been chained down so that they face a single wall. They have spent their entire lives staring at this wall. On the wall are shadows caused by puppets behind the prisoners. This wall is all the prisoners know–it is their entire world. But then, one day, one of the prisoners is freed. He feels that the shadows on the wall are more real than the puppets he sees–after all, he does not know what a puppet is, but he has known these shadows for his entire life. Eventually, he acclimates to this new “reality”. He goes to the surface and witnesses new and glorious things.
