I’ve found Circus Ponies Notebook to be a really good all-purpose notepad. You can drop files into it, as well as text, and it even creates a searchable index. I’ve used it for taking notes in meetings, as well as for organizing projects. You can export your notebooks to html if you have to share things with a group. It doesn’t have the flexibility of some word-processing-styled software, but they are getting there.
