What is a giclee print?
“Giclee – pronounced ‘jjeeclay’ Giclee is a fine art printmaking medium. The ‘giclee’ is a French colloquialism for a ‘spraying of ink.’ These prints are produced using state of the art ink jet printing methods. The fidelity to the original offered by this method is outstanding. This is as close to holding the original painting as you can get! The process is slow and meticulous. Only archival inks and substrates are used, assuring longevity. Each print in a limited edition is hand signed and numbered in the image and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Prints on canvas include a generous two inch border for ease of stretching. Giclee is an exciting new printmaking process for fine art. It uses environmentally safe vegetable-based, water soluble dyes and pigments. The process works by translating a digitized original from any source into a high speed stream of microscopic color droplets.
Giclee prints are created using the Giclee printing process which uses a very sophisticated digital printer to deliver a fine stream of ink onto archival paper. Giclée (pronounced “zhee-clay”) is a French word meaning “a spraying of ink”. With the advent of giclée, the art of reproducing fine art has become even more precise. Giclée’s have the highest apparent resolution available today — as high as 1,800 dpi. In addition, since no screens are used, the prints have a higher apparent resolution than lithographs and a color range that exceeds that of serigraphy.
