What is a gauss meter and what should I understand about gauss?
A gauss meter is an instrument used to measure lines of magnetic flux at a specific point on a magnet, but it is not correct to say that this number indicates the strength of a magnet. In fact, the gauss reading provides no information about the total energy of a magnet being tested or about how far the energy will project from its surface. So, be wary of anyone marketing magnetic products on the basis of gauss alone. There are other equally important considerations, such as the specific magnetic material used, and one should not use a gauss reading for purposes of comparison. We do not recommend using a gauss reading for the purpose of comparing magnetic strength as one would use horsepower or cubic inches to compare engine size and power.
