What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation or FCE?
The WorkWell (Isernhagen) functional capacity evaluation methodology and protocol is used at Highland Park Physical Therapy. An FCE is the comprehensive, objective testing of a person’s ability to perform work-related tasks. It is musculoskeletally oriented (muscle, bone, joint, and nervous system), so as performance is rated, both abilities and limitations can be noted as they relate to physical and functional findings. The purpose of the test is to stress the physical abilities to the maximum in order to accurately document observations regarding work and activities of daily living. It should describe full function of the client, as well as limitations, so re-injury can be prevented. The client is educated regarding their own abilities and limitations. The FCE is an integral part of the return-to-work process and forms a medical basis for return-to-work decisions.
