A fraud alert is a consumer statement on your credit report which states: “Do not open lines of credit without contacting me first!” It is active for 90 days and should be renewed every 90 days for at least a year. A fraud alert does not affect your credit score. Also, a fraud alert has no effect on your existing credit accounts or credit cards. It is a warning to credit grantors to contact you first to confirm that you did make a request for credit.
