A formal observation is planned in advance with the teacher and mentor or administrator. A lesson plan is requested and discussed with the teacher at a pre observation conference. The goals, teaching strategies and modifications for special needs students are some of the things that are discussed during the pre observation conference. Usually a formal observation lasts for 45 minutes or an entire lesson but may vary. Following the observation a post observation conference is held to debrief about the strengths and weaknesses of the lesson. At this time the observer may share suggestions and develop an action plan with the teacher to help guide his or her professional teaching skills.
