What is a floating floor”?
A floating floor is one that is not attached to the subfloor. Most hard surface floors such as hardwood, ceramic tile and vinyl tile are attached in some way to the subfloor. However, laminates are not. Laminate flooring is installed by joining the individual planks together by a locking tongue and groove system, but the laminate flooring as a whole remains unattached to the subfloor, so it is referred to as a floating floor.
