What is a federal railway company?
A federal railway company is one that holds a valid certificate of fitness. Generally, a railway is considered to be “within the legislative authority of Parliament” if it meets one or more of the following criteria: • crosses provincial borders or international borders; • has been declared by Parliament to be for the general advantage of Canada; • is owned, controlled, leased or operated by a person who operates a railway within the legislative authority of Parliament; or • is an integral part of an existing federal railway.
