Arizona Ash and Texas Green Ash both grow fast…but don’t eliminate “slow” growers from your list. You don’t need a tree to get to be 40ft in a few years to shade your first floor window, remember. Consider a Live Oak. They’re beautiful when mature, and you can buy them large enough that they’ll begin shading your window immediately. Go to a local grower/nursery and look at what they have. Where I work, we sell lot of trees that already have 2- 3″ trunks, and are 15 feet tall. I would say it’s more a matter of what you LIKE, that which actually has the fastest growth rate. Also – remember not to plant a tree 10 feet from your window. They will get big. And if you get a “fast grower”, it’ll be big sooner than you expect. I don’t know what you set-up is, but you might also consider some kind of smaller multi-stem tree or large shrub – like some magnolias, or other flowering shrubs that only get 15-20 tall max.
