What is a EGD?
An EGD is an exam of your upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It includes a study of your esophagus (the tube between your mouth and stomach) your stomach and the upper part of your small bowel (intestine). It can be used to help your doctor find the cause of some problems in the GI tract such as pain or bleeding. Your doctor or nurse will tell you why you are having an EGD. You will be given the opportunity to view a video of an EGD as part of your patient instructions prior to having the procedure. You will also be given a patient education sheet detailing the procedure.
