What is a drop-in or semi-recessed sink?

A drop-in sink, also called a self-rimming sink, has a finished lip that allows part of the sink to sit above the countertop. These sinks usually have a partially finished exterior, since some of it is exposed, while the other part is hidden below the countertop. A semi-recessed sinks have a similar installation, however they sit on the very front edge of the mounting surface, so only the back portion of the sink gets dropped in, while the front part overhangs the countertop.
