What is a Donor Coordinator?
Donor Coordinators play an important role in caring for donors and their families during and after organ and tissue donation. A Donor Coordinator is on-call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Donor Coordinator is available to answer any questions families may have, discuss consent for donation, and coordinate the process of donation by: • Arranging for necessary blood tests to be performed to ensure tissue compatibility between donor and recipient, and to exclude any infectious diseases the prospective donor may have that could be passed on to the transplant recipient • Contacting transplant units and tissue banks, both local and interstate, to find the most suitable person to receive each organ (heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, kidneys). Donated tissue (cornea, bone, heart valves) may be stored for transplantation at a later date • Liaising with surgical teams involved in the donation surgery • Providing follow-up and support if a family chooses Contact DonateWest on 08 9222 0222 or d
