A DNS server is the computer that translates all those WWW.XXX.YYY.ZZZ numbers into names such as www.coffee.net. You usually need this to browse the WWW. Often during installation, you are only provided with the location of one DNS server, but it is always best to have more than one configured in case your primary DNS server goes down.
