What is a dipmeter, how can we interpret dipmeter data?

This topic is outside the scope of the course. A dipmeter is a wireline logging tool that operates by running resistance pads along the wellbore wall. A computer programme matches patterns of the resistivity plots from each pad and fits planar surfaces through the matched data. Gyroscopes and compasses allow those planes to be represented in true orientation (they were measured in the inclined wellbore!). The usual plot shows the dip magnitude, and the direction of dip versus the depth in the well. Interpretation of dipmenter plots is an artform!
