What is a day in the life of a cartoonist like?
Stressful. For quite a long time now, Ive been a daily editorial cartoonist and it is a highly stressful existence. Bill Mitchell, one of my predecessors at The Australian, put the nature of the job beautifully. He said the cartoonist only has to be funny once a day, but its a lot harder than you think. Theres always the awful prospect of a deadline looming at the end of every day in my case six days of every week. From the moment I wake up, the only thing on my mind is my cartoon once Ive completed it, it feels like I flip over into a different world.
