What is a dairy farm?

A dairy farm is a farming facility that is devoted to raising and housing animals that produce milk.  Usually dairy farms will also have fields for growing the food the cows eat and they will also keep a bull on hand in order to keep their cows’ bloodlines going.  There is also a milking parlor, which is where the cows are milked.  In the past, all milking was done by hand but now it is done with milking machines that use sterile tubes to transport it to the milking machines where it is tested for pathogens before being sent to a milk truck, which will take it to a central processing location.

Usually cows are housed on dairy farms but goats, sheep, yaks and other animals can also be housed here.  The goal is to produce a lot of really good quality milk that can be sold throughout the surrounding region.

Over the course of time storage tanks, pasteurization, refrigeration and better roads have evolved.  This has allowed for the improvement of dairy farms and they are now able to produce huge volumes of milk.

Some of these small dairy farms make their own butter, cheese, cream, yogurt and other dairy products to sell.  This requires some special skills, as well as additional licensing and inspections.  For this reason, a lot of farmers prefer to sell their milk to dairy cooperatives or manufacturers instead of making these products themselves.  So, whenever you purchase a specific brand of milk you should know that you are actually purchasing milk that comes from quite a few different farmers.

Humans have been keeping animals for their milk for centuries, but the dairy farm didn’t really catch on in a big way until people figured out how to handle milk safely. Historically, many communities had a few milk animals which were handled and driven communally, and establishments such as abbeys might keep animals for the purpose of making cheese and other goods for sale. Individual farmers and landholders generally made their own milk and cheese as needed from their cows, sheep, and other animals.
