What is a controlled substance?
A controlled substance is a drug that has been determined by the Florida Legislature to be harmful to a person who uses it. The Florida Statute that lists controlled substances is 893.03. There are five categories of controlled substances, Schedules I through V, with Schedule I having the most potential to harm a person and no medicinal value. The other Schedules may have some medicinal value but also have the potential to cause harm, a doctors prescription is required for the person to use or possess some of them. Not all drugs prescribed by doctors are controlled substances.
