What is a Consultant Ophthalmologist?
The Consultant Ophthalmologist is a registered medical practitioner1 who has been admitted onto the UK specialist register by virtue of having undergone approved training, passed essential professional examinations and acquired appropriate experience in all the relevant ophthalmic subjects, both surgical and medical. The Consultant Ophthalmologist is appointed by an Advisory Appointments Committee in a process governed by the National Health Service (Appointment of Consultants) Regulations 1996 and supported by The National Health Service (Appointment of Consultants) Regulations Good Practice Guidance. The Consultant works with and within a team of medical and other healthcare professionals to provide leadership and co-ordination to that team.
