What is a compaction test?

A compaction test is a test that is performed by a licensed testing laboratory on the fill pad that is often times placed on a site to raise the elevation of a structure. This test is different from a deep sub-surface soil investigation and a compaction test is only performed on the fill pad. The engineer’s require that when fill material is being brought into a site to raise the elevation of the property, that the fill be tested for type and compaction. What this means is that there are specific requirements for the type of soil to be used. Typically this is an A – 4 soil or better (sandy clay) and that the plasticity index be less than 20. You need to verify with your dirt contractor of what type of soil he has and will be using on your pad before he/she starts. This means obtaining a sample of the dirt and submitting it to the testing laboratory. Once the type has been approved by the testing laboratory, the dirt contractor then can proceed.
