What is a community newspaper all about?
Perhaps what says the most of what the Herald is all about is the story in the Oct. 8, 2009, edition about Joan and Ray Dawson celebrating their 50th anniversary. When the Dawsons brought in their announcement, they also brought the clipping of the article that appeared in the Herald Democrat 50 years ago announcing their marriage. We love it when things like this happen. Kind of a full circle of good news reported right here at the Herald. Next Wednesday, Oct. 21, the Herald Democrat celebrates its 130th birthday. Although we are not the oldest newspaper in Colorado, we are among the oldest 13 papers, and all of us moved up a notch when the Rocky Mountain News unfortunately shut down this past year. In this issue, we’re running the history of the newspaper, which we first presented in 2004. It’s a little long, but we hope that you read it and get a feel for some of the journalists who have had a direct role in Leadville’s community newspaper over the past 130 years. The truth is that
