What is a communications server?

0

A communications server is a network workstation that has its own modem and phone line (or access to a NetWare Connect modem pool) and runs the PCXW Communications Engine (CE). Individual workstations connected to the network run PCXW from a shared space on the network and queue jobs for submission to the Xpedite Service on the communications server. The CE on the communications server then transmits the requests to the Xpedite Service for all users. This represents a low cost solution for establishing a gateway to the Xpedite Service and only requires that one PC have an analog phone line and modem (or access to a Novell NetWare Connect modem pool). The PCXW communications server has the advantage of providing a central location for the communication resources which makes it easier for an MIS department to manage them.
