What is a combined heat and power station?
A CHP station is simply a form of electricity generation for the purposes of the levy and is treated as such unless it is registered and certified under the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) CHP Quality Assurance (CHPQA) programme and is in possession of a Secretary of State Climate Change Levy Exemption Certificate. Any such station is then treated for CCL purposes according to its CHPQA certificate. This treatment may attract less or even no CCL compared with conventional generators.
