What is a code enforcement officer&what powers do they have?
A code enforcement officer is an employee of a government agency charged with the responsibility of enforcing government laws and rules on land use such as zoning ordinances and building codes. Typically, this person works for a county or city or other local government division such as a township or rural district.PowersCode enforcement officers are not considered peace officers; thus, they do not carry guns and do not have the power of arrest and detention. Although some states allow for a “citizen’s arrest” and presumably that power would be vested in a code enforcement officer, such power is seldom if ever exercised. A code enforcement officer is limited to issuing a citation for any violation observed.RequirementsGenerally, a code enforcement officer is required to have a high school education and be familiar with the laws and rules to be enforced. Certification by a state or national association is also required as well as a current driver’s license.DutiesInspections are the prima
