A claw machine is a vending machine which operates like an arcade game, introducing a note of challenge into the endeavor. Someone who wishes to obtain something from a claw machine must manipulate a hanging claw in an attempt to pick up a prize. If he or she is successful, the prize will be dropped into a chute; otherwise, nothing is won in the venture. The ability to successfully get things from a claw machine is often viewed as a socially desirable trait, since they are notoriously difficult to use. A claw machine is a big machine that has a crane type mechanism. You put a few coins in, and you guide it to hover over a toy you like (usually a large stuffed animal, although some have chocolates or cheap jewelry). When you push a button, the crane drops and you might be lucky enough to have the claws grab onto a toy. It carries it to a chute where it drops it. Apparently kids are good at climbing up these chutes.
