What is a citizen petition?
A citizen petition is a way for a resident to put something on the Town Meeting Warrant if it is not addressed through the budget, i.e., paving roads, installing street lights, etc. Citizen petitions require 25 signatures of registered Salem voters per RSA 39:3. Petitions are due in the Town Manager’s office the 5th Tuesday before the Town Meeting, held the 2nd Tuesday in March. The Town Manager’s office can help you with developing the language for your citizen petition; however, it is your responsibility to determine the costs, if any, associated with your petition. Sample citizen petition forms will soon be available on the Town’s web site. Contact the Town Manager’s Office at 890-2120 for additional information. • When is Town Meeting/Election? The Town’s municipal election is held annually on the 2nd Tuesday in March. The Town also has two deliberative sessions. The first is held on the 2nd Saturday in February. This deliberative session discusses the Budget, Collective Bargaining
