What is a “Chorus” or “Refrain”?
As it pertains to music, the definition of a chorus is: • A group of persons singing in unison. • A group singing choral parts in connection with soloists or individual singers, such as in an opera or oratorio. • A piece of music for singing in unison. • The part of a song that recurs at intervals, usually following each verse (a.k.a. “refrain.”) On this web site, often you’ll see the word [Chorus] used to represent the part of a song which is repeated other places in the song. Many times, when this is the case, the lyrics to that song are usually preceded by the word [Chorus] and followed by the lyrics of the chorus. Later, when the Actual chorus is supposed to be repeated in the song, you may see only the word [Chorus] displayed (and not the words of the chorus), indicating that the words of the chorus are to be repeated. In some songs the word [Chorus] is not included in the lyrics, even though a chorus exists in the song.
